Jackie B. Smith, Booster Club President, holds a BS Degree in Physical Education from Shaw University. He served the Wake County Public School System before retiring with over 31 years of service in various roles to include: Assistant High School Principal, the first African American Athletic Director in Wake County, Driver’s Education Teacher and Coach to numerous sports teams. Jack credits Shaw University for much of his success in life…things may have turned out differently had he not received a 4 year scholarship for his athletic skills in basketball.
While at Shaw, he was named the most improved player in 1968, the nickname of “Super Sub”. He went on to become a starter for the next three years averaging 17 points a game and the conference in field goal percentage of .741. He was named All Conference, All NAIA and Outstanding Player of the Year. In addition to this he was the only player to have a “perfect game”, scoring 33 points—15 of 15 in field goals and 3 of 3 at the free throw line.
Jack is also a military man. He served in the U.S. Navy where he worked for Special Services as Assistant Athletic Director and played basketball and fast pitch softball. He was chosen All Navy and Player of the Year. He was the only Sailor chosen to represent the U.S. Navy in the AAU National Championship.
Jack’s love for Shaw University is more than lip service. He is a member of the Raleigh/Wake Alumni Chapter, the National Alumni Association and the Hall of Fame Committee. He is often seen at sporting events cheering the teams and many other events supporting his dearly beloved Shaw U.
Although unable to physically play many sports today, serving as President of the Booster Club allows Jack to help other athletes fulfill their dream of a college education, while doing an activity they enjoy.
